Founded in March 2011 the SOMALI STOCK EXCHANGE (SSE) is the first authorized stock exchange operated in Somalia. The stock exchange was traded it's first share in August 2015. Historically trade in shares goes back in decades as traditionally shares are sold and bought through close network and informal way. The SOMALI STOCK EXCHANGE was aimed to create a sufficient securities market where sellers of financial securities and buyers meet. The demand for capital is increasing by the day for Somali businesses both large and SME’s. One way of defining exchanges is to regard them as providing a link between "deficit units;"​ people, enterprises and governments that are in need of more funds than they already have, and "surplus units;"​ those that have more funds than they need at a particular point in time. In doing so, the SOMALI STOCK EXCHANGE contributes to the economic development of all Somali regions by mobilizing remittance, diaspora savings and attracting foreign investments. The SOMALI STOCK EXCHANGE’s functions do not diverge from this definition but amplify it. The SOMALI STOCK EXCHANGE seeks to provide a market for the trading of stocks and bonds in Somalia. It does so by helping establish a fair, efficient, liquid, and transparent capital market in Somalia. The SOMALI STOCK EXCHANGE will provide the necessary trading facilities, monitors trading and strives to safeguard the rights of investors. It also engages in information dissemination and is of added value on the formulation capital market legislation.
